Equipment: All own gear, but tank and weights. 24 lb, 12 l aluminium.

Notes: First of a five pack that was a good deal with Pro Dive ($80 per double boat dive). But that’s really where good and Pro Dive part company. Too many on the boat; not enough weight to go around, guides filling their pockets with rusty chain. A disastrous dive master, carefully arranging for everyone to arrive at the anchor chain simultaneously and descend together in a struggling mass of panic and tanks and fins in the face. We four should have gone our own way immediately, but we’d arranged to stick by this poor Scot who arrived at the bottom to find one of his posse missing. So, hanging around in the cold murk, tearing through the air at 20 metres while he went in earnest to find his last diver, bobbing around at the top because she was under-f**king-weighted. Back then and a regroup and off for the scenery straight into a load of wide-eyed noobs, fresh from their open water course and wondering how, with the extra degree of freedom and the great size of the ocean, that scuba diving can consist mainly of bumping into expressionless staring mutes. A clusterf**k, according to Simon. And he was right.

Accumulated time underwater: 1 day, 11 hours and 39 minutes
