Dive #85: The Gap, Sydney

Place:The Gap Buddy:Ciara
Weather:Fine Type:Boat (Hoochie Mama)
Max. depth (m):21.0 Visibility (m):10
Time down:15:02 Dive time (mins):37
Average depth (m):14.9 Water temp. (C):15.0

Notes: Second of a double on the Hoochie Mama. There are two sites called The Gap in Sydney. One is near the South head of the harbour. The other is the one we visited on this dive, just east of Old Man’s Hat. Did a reasonable job of the navigation by following a kind of star-shape from the anchor chain. Lots of soft sponges. Found a fairly tight swim through.

Equipment: As previous dive.

Accumulated time underwater: 2 days, 7 hours and 6 minutes

Dive #84: The Royal Shepherd, Sydney

Place:The Royal Shepherd Buddy:Ciara
Weather:Overcast Type:Boat (Hoochie Mama)
Max. depth (m):26.2 Visibility (m):5
Time down:13:16 Dive time (mins):22
Average depth (m):14.3 Water temp. (C):16.0

Notes: Four of us for a double boat dive through Plunge: Eithne, Ciara, Fiona and I. Plunge don’t have a boat, so they organised places for us on the Hoochie Mama. The sea was a bit bumpy on the day so the boat stayed inside the heads of Sydney harbour.

Bit of a fookin’ disaster. The boat was anchored pretty much on the wreck of the Royal Shepherd in Sydney harbour. Because of the tidal current, the anchor chain was almost horizontal. We descended near it, but without a hold of it. Bad vis. so we lost it almost immediately. Followed a compass bearing along the sandy bottom with great uncertainty. Finally we aborted, took ages ascending and surfaced a few hundred metres down current of the boat. They had to pick us up…

Equipment: Usual own gear. Tank from Plunge.

Accumulated time underwater: 2 days, 6 hours and 29 minutes
