Notes: Shallow in around the uprights of the old Rapid Bay Jetty. Leafy sea-dragons and coral and fish and crabs. A little cold towards the end- ok though after two minutes in the sun. In then ashore and a shower and on to Kangaroo Island.
Accumulated time underwater: 1 day, 11 hours and 2 minutes
Equipment: All rented except for accessories (computer, compass, torch, camera, knife), from Underwater Sports. Good quality Mares gear.
Notes: The first of a double, embedded in an otherwise land-based, two-week, 3000 km, touristic expedition around South Australia. Booked with Underwater Sports in Adelaide ($175 pp), who were good enough to take our measurements by phone and bring the rental gear to Marina St. Vincent where they keep their boat. A short jaunt to the submerged destroyer. Then a nice dive, though I was short of hands with the camera and the new torch on its first outing. Fewer pictures because of this, and the presence of a decent amount of suspended matter in the water- average for the site, apparently. Would’ve liked twin-tanks, about five more goes, and a wreck diver certification to explore properly.
Grand dive boat. Eight divers on board, plus a skipper and two crew in the water, dangling shark deterring devices and guiding nicely. Among the more pleasant surface intervals, with sausages cooked on a mini-barbie with bread and sauce in the nearby ultra-calm Rapid bay with the sun shining.
Took a (highly exciting) video of the boat’s bridge:
