Average depth (m):0.0 Water temp. (C):0.0

Equipment: All own gear. Rented tank. Need to accessorize a bit. Would like a clip to hold SPG on lower left D-ring of BCD. Also a high-vis clip for AAS.

Accumulated time under water: 22 hrs 26 mins

Dive #37: Fish Rock Cave, South West Rocks, New South Wales

Place:Fish Rock Cave Buddy:Eithne
Weather:Sunny Type:Boat
Max. depth (m):24.4 Visibility (m):15
Time down:09:44 Dive time (mins):56
Average depth (m):0.0 Water temp. (C):0.0

Equipment: All own gear. Rented tank.

Notes: A good Christmas eve. This cave dive certainly isn’t about subtle beauty- all massive stuff: sting rays, nurse sharks by the dozen, big cray fish. A pang of pity for the sharks trailing fishing line from hooks in their mouths. And this a marine reserve. SW rocks diving provided a good service. Leaving the camera behind was a mistake.

Accumulated time under water: 21 hrs 38 mins

Dive #36: The Monument, Botany Bay national park, Sydney

Place:The Monument Buddy:Eithne
Weather:Sunny Type:Shore
Max. depth (m):13.4 Visibility (m):5
Time down:12:21 Dive time (mins):38
Average depth (m):9.7 Water temp. (C):18.0

Equipment: All recently bought gear: Neptune 2-piece wetsuit, Mares reg, 21lb weight (slightly too much). Appollo BCD, 12 l steel tank. See gear page.

Notes: Why it took two years to get back in the water, I really don’t know. I kept putting off diving on the grounds that it would be cheaper dive if I had my own gear, but it took ages to get it together and actually get my own gear. However, it did finally happen, and we did a shore dive with some friends to try it out. This was my first ever DIY dive. We rented tanks and other gear, and drove to the site and had a dive. Simple!

The dive wasn’t that comfortable, as was to be expected I suppose, with the gear and the time and so on. I had trouble at first, not having tightened the BCD strap on the tank enough. I learnt later that new straps are prone to stretching and that it’s best to wet the strap before tightening with a new BCD.

Further details: average depth 9.7 metres. Water temp 18 degrees celsius. Wind 15-20 knots. Slightly choppy water. Aengus, Eithe, Fiona, Gaetano, Edel, Declan, Jenny went diving.
